Summary:
This story has been the main headline for most journals in South Korea for the past few months. Since the new samsung phone was released for sales back at the end of 2016 South korean news and politics have not strayed far from the “samsung scandal”. As we know, with advancement in comes fault as well. Once samsung's left the stores with their new owners, it didn't take long for samsung to start getting calls from their customers complaining about the exploding of their phones. But what made this so big wasn't just the massive amount of cases, but the large amount of samsung is being sued for. The explosion are caused by a fault in the battery which comes from a third party manufacturer. However, Samsung has taken the blame in all of the cases. As an update the attempts to get the president of Samsung- a South Korean jailed for the nearly fatal flaws in their products. He president has not been sent to jail and there are slim to none chances of him going there in the future.
My Opinion:
I know that with innovation in technology come trial and error. However, with Samsung being the largest sellers in TVs, Smartphones and other electronics according to the text. It is hard to understand how such a big company could let a flaw like this slip under their nose. I think that Samsung should have rightfully placed some of the blame on the battery manufacturers, since they're the ones who made the defected product. However, there is still to blame on Samsung, such an experienced company, for choosing a battery type or company that could have had a flaw, and not making sure all of the phones are safe to use.
How this relates to South Korean Politics:
As we know South Korea is one of the most advanced countries when it comes to technology, not far behind China and Japan. However, as we expect technology to keep innovating and inventing, we also put our lives into the hands of technology. With a relatively basic technology such as a samsung phone, being fatal, it is hard to imagine that flying cars and outer space greenhouses are very promising in the safety department either. Samsung is one of South Korea's biggest technology companies and the flaw could ruin the name of South Korean technology.
