Summary:
Tony Tan Kend Yam is the President of Singapore. Wednesday, January 11th President Tan arrived in Laos after a stop in Cambodia to visit to the nations capitol, Vientiane . Laos welcomes president with a ceremonial welcome to the presidential palace where they will later hold a state banquet hosted by the Lao president Bounnhang Vorachit. There he will lay a ceremonial wreath at the Unknown Soldier Monument. Tan also met up with prime minister Thongloun Sisoulith. He also plants to visit Laos University of Health Sciences where the presidents own, Singapore international foundation and Singapore health services help improve physiotherapy education and meet the governor of the ancient royal town of Luang Prabang in his city and tour the royal palace museum.
My Thoughts:
I find it very interesting for the President of Singapore to visit Laos. I wasn't aware that there was this amount of communication and interaction within the east asian nations. But I think it is good. In America you don't often hear about the presidents of other nations coming to visit. But for a smaller country like Laos, its more apparent and I think its good that the smaller countries are on such good terms that there are more happy visits than just in town for business. Furthermore I think it is interesting that Tan is laying a ceremonial wreath at the unknown soldier monument. I think this is another act of peace.
How this relates to the politics of Laos:
I think this article represents Lao politics pretty well, you don't often see scandals, or missile crisis in Laos, while the economic issues are more apparent. Lao people and officials seem to like the political setup and there don't seem to be many big headlines within the countries politics. This also showcases the overall relationship Laos has with other countries. There isn't much conflict, which allows Laos to have presidents come visit on good terms. Tan laying the ceremonial wreath at the Unknown soldier Monument is also an honor for both of the countries as well.
